The day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. … Then sudden destruction comes upon them.
In you, o LORD, I put my trust. … You are my rock and my fortress.
1 Thessalonians 5:2.3: Psalm 71:1.3.
A man who lived on the coast of Florida once ordered a barometer from a mail order firm. When it arrived, he felt terribly deceived: the barometer pointed obstinately to “storm”. He tapped the glass and shook it violently, but the pointer wouldn’t move.
In his anger he wrote a letter of complaint to the firm that delivered it, posted it without delay, then set it off on a business trip. When he returned from his journey, a terrible surprise awaited him: the barometer had disappeared, but so had his house! It had been hit by a cyclone! Far from being out of order, the barometer had told the truth. The man should have taken its warning more seriously.
Regarding the future of the world, are you aware that God has given us a trustworthy barometer, the Bible? Being of divine origin, it is absolutely precise, will never get out of order, and its forecasts are reliable. The last book in the Bible, the Revelation, warns us of a dreadful storm threatening the world’s inhabitants. As it happens, people have put God aside; they live without worrying about their Creator and despise the Saviour He gave them. With immense patience has its limit, and the dreadful storm announced will break out on “those who dwell on the earth” (Revelation 3:10). Do you ignore the warnings of the divine barometer? Take them seriously, find the right refuge without delay in Jesus the Saviour. Whoever puts his trust in Him is safely sheltered from the storm.
