The rock, his work is perfect. … A God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is he.
Deuteronomy 32, 4.
Without any invariability, without unchanging, reliable leading lights life would not go on in this world. That applies both to the laws of nature and to plans people make for their lives. How else could we plan for the future or establish a foundation for our life?
We pay into pension schemes for security in our old age. We depend on the reliability of politicians to take notice of our needs. We cannot even get along in our social life without binding agreements. But supposing these people fail or are guilty of improprieties from which they themselves profit? Such things are always in the news, and so far there is no sure solution to the problem.
Now let us acquaint you with God, who still upholds the whole universe by His power. After forty years’ experience at the head of the nation of Israel Moses described God with these attributes: rock strong, true and without injustice. On this firm foundation he was able to lead the people safely through the greatest of difficulties with God’s help. Such experiences count for something!
We are probably not leaders of people, but we all have worries, problems and fears. And if the foundations we build on are destroyed, then let us turn to God. Put His constancy, whether He keeps His promises, to the test. Start speaking to Him trustingly. This God, the rock, survives the vicissitudes of time and all imaginable misfortunes. Because of His absolute faithfulness the prophet Samuel once called God “the strength of Israel” (1 Samuel 15, 29).
