God’s Word: Indispensable

Dirty hands holding an old bible. Very short depth-of-field

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

Matthew 4:4.

It is understandable that everyone takes good care of his life, attending to safety and sustenance. Our daily bread is one of the important pre-requisites. The ability to work and keep a job are also necessary, as is the efficient functioning of the economy and the state.

At some stage, however, the time comes when our health fails and the body can perhaps no longer take in food. Then, at the latest, we start to wonder whether life isn’t more than just eating and enjoying the proper functioning of our body. Man does not live by bread alone. How are things to continue? Isn’t there more than mere physical wellness and material satisfaction? Maybe our thoughts have never gone beyond our material life. We have simply subordinated the spiritual side to material things.

God has more in mind for man than letting him live on the material side and then dying. God wishes to speak to His creature and be heard and understood by him. For this purpose He has given him His Word. The Bible is the Word of God.- And Jesus Christ is the Word, the eternal Word who became Man. Whoever receives the Word by faith, similarly to taking in food, receives life that cannot be affected by the transience and death of the human body. Whoever believes on the Son of God has eternal life. That is life from God, with God, and for God (cf. John 3:36). Do you possess living faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? He is “the bread of life” (John 6:48).
