The hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship him.

John 4:23.

The Lord Jesus was speaking here of the Christian era, in which people would be able to worship God in a manner that corresponded to His holiness, as He desired.

God Himself brought about the necessary conditions for such worship. He sent His Son to earth in order to reveal Himself through Him as Father. But He did much more. He gave His Son into death, so that people could become His children through faith in His finished work of redemption. In this happy relationship they are able to understand His thoughts and feelings.

They are often worshippers who can honour God the Father for His love, grace, righteousness and holiness. Moreover they know how to bring Him especial joy: when they praise His son, in whom He finds all His pleasure, and in wonderment make mention of His glories.

Christian worship is voluntary; the Father does not demand or command it. He rather seeks the redeemed who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. How His heart rejoices when we fulfill His wish! The best opportunity to do so is on Sunday when we gather together to break bread. There we are occupied with Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death. Under the impression of what happened at the cross, we worship the Father as we contemplate the traits of His character that come to light in the death of His Son.
