American comedian, winner of several Emmy and Grammy Awards, and television host of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert recently made a startling revelation. He was born in a Catholic family but left faith in his teens and became an atheist in his twenties.
He went through the painful tragedy of losing his father and two brothers dying in a plane crash when he was just 10 years old. How could a loving God allow such evil? His atheism only hardened.
Then on a cold day in Chicago, Illinois a stranger gave him a little Bible. He opened the Bible, and started to read Jesus’s words:
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?…Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?’
Those words of Jesus penetrated Colbert’s mind and heart. “I stood on the street corner in the cold and read the sermon. And my life has never been the same”
In an interview he was asked, ‘Who is God for you?’. Colbert replied, ‘It’s Jesus Christ’.
Sin and disobedience brought evil, pain, suffering, death, anxiety into our world. But God came to this world as Jesus of Nazareth to give us His comforting Word and His presence to live through all the days of our lives. Atheism has no such comfort or hope.
Let us not be weary of handing out Bibles to the strangers. It has the Word of God which will change atheists into Christians.
