Today’s question: Russell Moore leaving ERLC. Is it a good thing?
Russell Moore announced his departure from Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), which he led since 2013. For many years, he has become a lighting rod among Christians.
He criticized Trump when other evangelical leaders were silent or supported Trump. He shouted at Southern Baptist leaders: you are normalizing an awful candidate. Trump is an awful candidate.
When SBC leaders met with Trump at Trump Tower in 2016, Moore said they had “drunk the Kool-Aid”. Trump was aware of what Russel Moore was doing and reacted furiously in a tweet. He called Moore “a nasty guy with no heart”. A nasty guy with no heart. Naturally Trump supporters did not like Mr.Moore.
Now where is he going? He is going to work for Christianity Today magazine. Recently, this magazine has been leaving many Biblical standards to appease the progressives. Yes, it was established by Billy Graham but over the years it moved away from biblical foundations. Even Franklin Graham does not support it today. That shows where Mr. Moore is heading in his spiritual journey.
Recently Beth Moore left SBC to carve her own path. Why do these influential leaders leave SBC? What can Christians do under these circumstances?
First of all these are sad developments. Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 1:10
Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
1 Corinthians 1:10
The Corinthians are so divided into groups. They don’t have the same mind and the same judgment. So they don’t speak the same thing. Why is this happening in the church at Corinth? Look at verse 29.
That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
Their problem is their eyes are no longer on Christ. They are boating in things which are fleshly, carnal and worldly. Apostle Paul says, Jesus Christ is our wisdom, he is our righteousness, he is our sanctification, he is our redemption. His words should be our guide, not the words of human beings.
Our Lord Jesus Christ said, Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
Even heaven and earth shall pass away but the words of Christ shall not pass away. We can see the divinity of Christ in these words. His words are more important than the words of any other human beings. We should not make the ‘Trump test’ the litmus test for Christian Faith. If you support Trump, then you are a good Christian. If you don’t support Trump, then you are a bad Christian. God has not built his church on Trump or any other human being. Lord Jesus Christ is our foundation.
We should not be choosing political factions. Every political candidate, every political ideology must be judged by the Word of God. Our political preferences should not take precedence over the Word of God.
It is sad to see these divisions among Christians. How can we stop these divisions? Our focus should be on Christ and the Word of God. Not on human beings and their ideologies.
