Send your questions to info@doctorpaul.org. Today’s question is, Nikki Haley criticizing Kamala Harris. Is it right?
On Saturday, Kamala Harris tweeted, ‘Enjoy the long weekend’. Nikki Haley retweeted it and wrote, ‘Unprofessional and unfit’. Nikki Haley is the first female governor of South Carolina. Kamala Harris is the first female Vice President of the United States. Both are highly ambitious women. Both would like to become the President of the United States. They would like to become the first female President of the United States and make it a historical milestone. Both dislike each other based on political ideology and personal ambition.
First let us look at the timing. Today is Memorial Day. It is a day for honoring the men and women who have died while on duty with the US military. Every Memorial Day, I take a short break from my work and go to the local cemetery to pay my respects at a soldier’s grave.
The tradition of Memorial Day came out of the Civil War, which was fought to give liberation to African-Americans. Almost a million people died in the Civil War to give freedom to African-Americans. So, Kamala Harris should have been more mindful of Memorial Day than the long weekend to enjoy. Note her words, ‘Enjoy the long weekend’. That’s rubbing salt in the wounds of military families. Unfortunately, for most people in our generation it is nothing but a long vacation to enjoy their time. Even saying ‘Happy Memorial Day’ became controversial.
Happy Memorial Day? that’s racist. Our scholars throw racism on everything they see. But I don’t agree with that. There is nothing racist about observing Memorial Day.
This holiday came out of Christian theology.
Before his death, on the day of Passover, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said, ‘this is my body which is given for you, do this in remembrance of me’. I am going to sacrifice my life for your sins, so give thanks and continue to do this in remembrance of me. Every Sunday is a Memorial Day for us because we take time to remember our Savior who came to this world to die for our sins.
Memorial Day came from that Christian theology. When you go to Arlington National Cemetery, you see crosses engraved on the memorial stones. When you visit Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France, you see so many crosses standing across green pastures. Just like Jesus gave his life for our sins, these soldiers gave their lives for our liberty. Just like Jesus died so that we may live, these soldiers died so that we may live. Memorial Day has such Christian connotations.
Kamala Harris should respect that. It would have been nice to say, ‘Happy Memorial Day’ instead of ‘Enjoy the long weekend’. Kamala Harris thinks she is entitled to become US President. She is a child of our entitlement culture. Memorial Day is a day of thankfulness. Jesus broke the bread and gave thanks. When you recognize sacrifice, you will become thankful. The Progressives do not recognize the sacrifices of others, you do not find them thankful for anything. You often find them angry and petulant. They hate the cross because the cross is a symbol of sacrifice and gratitude. That is why Kamala Harris did not bother to express a heart of gratitude and thankfulness on this Memorial Day.
But we should not be like that. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance. We should express our gratitude to people who sacrifice for us. They remind us of Jesus, who made the ultimate sacrifice for our redemption. So, Happy Memorial Day.
