Esther Dhanraj and Dr.Robin Abraham: Did God send Gandhi to hell?

Welcome back to Defenders Voice. This is Dr.Paul. Thank you for joining us today. Please send me your questions to info@doctorpaul.org. Visit our website at www.doctorpaul.org for information about ministry and to subscribe to our podcast.

In today’s episode, I would like to address criticisms leveled against Christianity by two ex-Christians, Esther Dhanraj and Dr.Robin Abraham. I gave the link below. You can watch their video to better understand what I am going to say here.

Dr. Robin Abraham is a pediatrician. He comes from a Syrian Jacobite family. When he was growing up in Saudi Arabia, he was asked about his religious roots and then his discovery into his religious heritage started. Finally he found Hinduism is the greatest of all religions. Christianity’s claim that Jesus is the only way to heaven is childish. Is Gandhi going to hell? Are you kidding me?

These are excellent questions, no matter what your background is. Our Lord Jesus Christ made it crystal clear that He is the only way to heaven. We read in the gospel of John 14:6, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. No one comes to the Father, that means God, except through Jesus. The apostles also preached the same message. Great Christian apostle St.Paul said

“For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). There is one God. There is one mediator between God and humanity. That is our Lord Jesus Christ. No guru, no yogi, no imam, no bishop can be a mediator between you and God. You have to come to Christ. You have no choice.

There are dimensions to human existence where there are no distinctions between human beings. For example take Covid Pandemic. The virus does not care who you are. You may be rich or poor, male or female, educated or uneducated, young or old, Gandhi or Nehru, you are at risk. Here is Gandhi? Does the virus infect him? The virus says, ‘I don’t care, does Gandhi have a human body? Then I am coming for him’.

The Bible describes sin like a virus. It infected every human being. This virus drags every human towards death. Sin drags every human being towards hell.

Gandhi was a good man. He should not be going to hell. Gandhi was a good man? According to who? There are BJP politicians who open declared that Godse was better than Gandhi. Indians are divided whether Gandhi was a good man or a bad man. Some people say he was a good man. Some people say he was a bad man. Who has the authority to declare who is good and who is evil?

Hinduism does not even believe in the good and evil. It is a pantheistic religion. It says everything and everyone is a manifestation of the divine. It makes no distinction between Gandhi and Hitler. Both are manifestations of the divine. So, the statement ‘Gandhi was a good man’ makes no sense in Hinduism because it provides no objective moral standards to evaluate human behavior.

God of the Bible is distinct from his creation. Unlike Hindu gods, he is distinct from the created universe. Unlike Hindu gods, he has objective moral standards to evaluate human behavior. Unlike Hindu gods, he defines good and evil.

God of the Bible says, ‘there is no difference. All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.’ Romans 3:23

God says, everyone is infected with sin. Gandhi too was infected with sin. He too would need a Savior.

As the Covid Pandemic rages on, most people have bought pulse oximeters. Some of my patients call me and say, ‘Dr.Paul, my pulse oximeter shows my oxygen saturation as 80 percent. What should I do?’ I tell them, ‘the only thing that saves your life is oxygen.’ They say, ‘Doctor, I am using an Ayurvedic medicine, I am using olive oil’. I tell them, ‘No, they are useless. Don’t waste your time and money on them. You need oxygen.’ Why are we running for oxygen cylinders? That is the only thing that saves your life as oxygen saturation goes down in your body. Whether you are Gandhi or Nehru or Modi or Trump, it does not matter.

Jesus introduced himself as a physician from heaven. We are infected with sin. We are dying in sin. Jesus Christ is here to save us from our sins. He says, ‘I came to help you. let me help you’. You should not be saying, ‘this is childish. I don’t need Jesus’

Truth makes exclusive claims. So, there is nothing childish about Jesus being the only way to God.

Even in hell, God’s justice reigns. Hell is not ‘one size fits all’ kind of place.  In Revelation chapter 20, we read about the Great White Throne judgment. It says,

The dead were judged according to what they had done  as recorded in the books.(Revelation 20:11)

Please note those words: the dead were judged according to what they have done. If you lived a good life, then your hell will be more tolerable than the hell of a murderer or a rapist. Gandhi’s hell will be more tolerable than the hell of his murderer, Godse.

God’s mercy or God’s justice: what do you want? Would you come to the cross and beg for God’s mercy or would you go to God’s court and face justice? If I were you, I would choose God’s mercy at the cross of Christ. I hope Esther and Robin Abraham go to the cross for God’s mercy rather than wasting their time calling God’s salvation childish.

Ok, that’s all for today folks.
